There are so many things wrong with the Miami rave scene
The buzz that’s been circling the Facebook tubes has prompted me to write SOMETHING about IMF, the event which saw its first emergence last year with extreme success, and with its 3 following predecessors, built a solid foundation. Now, I wasn’t in the scene, nor was I aware of exactly what was IMF during its glory days, but from the accounts that I asked my friends, there were large amounts of people held tight at The Cove, Mekka, and another location which escapes me at the moment (if there WAS another location).
Now, the first 4 IMFs had upwards of 3 thousand people in attendance, with extremely good feedback from the crowd. I think it was from the fourth IMF that the ground which it had built started to crumble, and less and less people started going. The IMFs which I do remember are the Winter edition, and the one taking place this Sunday.
Currently, IMF is seen as a laughable event, one which can never really come back to what its predecessors had built. A change that I see in this IMF is something which struck me as peculiar, but maybe effective:
The previous IMFs had a big lineup of DJs, usually local Miami talent which, to face the facts, lacked some talent. No name dropping is gonna take place, but most DJs inexperience with anything besides what other local DJs play make them sound like clones of each other, but bring their flavor to the board. There are a lot of good DJs in Miami, and there are a lot of bad DJs in Miami. The only thing differentiating them being the actual experience and talent they have, or the amount of promotion they get. Getting back to the topic, the Festival was usually jam-packed with a lot of people trying to get their shot in impressing the crowds, but this new IMF has a select few DJs sharing a single stage. This new limited space takes out the hassle and complication of having several people try to work out different rooms.
Taking the event to Villa 221, a venue which I had never heard of, was probably a smart move. Many events these days are taken to either Mekka and its surrounding clubs, obscure clubs which no one had heard about, or packed in ranches/houses. From what the IMF preview video showed me, the grounds are nicely kept and very neat, and have impressed me as being a nice, relaxing venue. The size seems to be pretty large, which is the downfall of most events, but if the new structure of IMF holds up to what it promises, event-goers should have a nice time there.
In the end, we’ll see how IMF goes. It takes place from 12pm to 12am, and the page states that the $15 pre-sales are already sold out. Godseed You, Impact Music Festival.
